Is Maryland Wheelchair Accessible?
November 15, 2016
Every year, during the peak tourist season, many handicapped individuals visit the state of Maryland. During their visit, the most important problem they are worried about is whether Maryland is wheelchair accessible or not.
Don’t worry at all though. You and your wheelchair bound loved ones will have access to some of the best accommodations. You will be pleased to know that there exists an excellent mobility solution in the state of Maryland for the handicapped, the seniors and the disabled elderly.
Towns like Baltimore and Ocean City in Maryland provide special bus services for individuals in need. Many of these services are state funded via the American’s With Disabilities Act. Special pickups are also available for people with a 24 hour advance notice. The transportation departments are operational from 7 am to 4 pm on a daily basis for all. Numerous shopping malls and outdoor places also have wheel chair ramps for easy accessibility. Along with all this, wheelchair friendly apartment rentals can be found in the state as well.
Within Baltimore, although there are a limited number of wheelchair friendly taxis, the streets and sidewalks are well maintained, offering smooth means of transport. A large number of the tourist sites are also wheelchair accessible with wheelchair ramps, making life easier for seniors, the elderly and all handicapped individuals.
The Baltimore and Annapolis Trail is one such example. It acts as a great location for people who want to visit and relive their scenic history lessons. Baltimore’s public transportation is also fully accessible for the disabled and elderly wheelchair users. There is a metro subway system, which features one single line with 14 stops. This subway runs from the John Hopkins Hospital to Owings Mills.
Another mode of transportation, the Light Rail (LR), is also fully wheelchair accessible. All the trains in each station work in harmony, providing their wheelchair friendly services. In total, the LR system features three lines that serve 33 stations. Wheelchair access is provided to these light rails with the help of a high platform, which is accessed through wheelchair ramps on each station respectively.
Aside from Baltimore, a number of tourist attractions in Maryland are accessible for wheelchair bound people and the handicapped. For instance, the Chesapeake Beach, being wheelchair accessible, is a must visit for many tourists and citizens alike. Maryland’s Cross Island Trail also provides multiple disability friendly points of access from schools to libraries and ball fields.
Generally speaking, a majority of Maryland’s sights and beautiful tourist spots are in total compliance with the ADA. However, there are some places which are reported to be particularly not wheelchair friendly. The Edgar Allen Poe house is one such example.
