Traveling with a Disability: What You Need to Know
August 28, 2020
Traveling with a disability can be very challenging, so much so that many people forego traveling altogether. There are, however, some things that can help you prepare in order to ensure that you’re ready for the open road, wherever it takes you. Here are a few tips for traveling with a disability.
Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You Need
Whether you’re flying or you’re taking a road trip, time is the most important factor in ensuring a safe journey. This is especially true if you’re living with a disability. People with mobility challenges may need more time to get through security in the airport, so give yourself plenty of time if you’re traveling with bags of medication or mobility equipment. You should also schedule extra time for car trips to ensure everyone has ample time to rest periodically. After all, sitting in the car can be tiring, especially if the seats aren’t optimally comfortable.
Research Accessibility Options in Advance
As you plan your trip, no matter where you’re going, you need to make sure you understand your accessibility options for when you arrive. That means calling the airport and making sure you’ve made your arrangements in advance, calling your hotel, and even reaching out to local sightseeing spots to ensure you’re going to be able to get around. Thankfully, we live in an age where travel destinations are starting to pay more attention to the needs of disabled tourists, but it’s still helpful to be as prepared as possible beforehand.
Know Your Rights When You Travel
This is particularly important when flying, but you have a right to safe travel according to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Air Carrier Access Act. Before you get to the airport, familiarize yourself with these laws. You may even wish to print them out to bring with you so that you can best ensure your rights will be respected by staff and by the other passengers.
