Aging in place is a plan and concept which helps seniors stay in their homes for as long as possible. Plans are comprised of several factors including home modifications, aids to daily living, and financial planning.

Let’s take a more in-depth look at what exactly aging in place is.

What is Aging in Place?

How Do We Change as We Age?

As patients get older, there are many changes which take place in the way daily life progresses. These changes affect our overall mobility and require changes in our surrounding as well. A few examples of these changes include:

  • Loss or Decrease in Vision
  • Loss or Decrease in Hearing
  • Loss or Decrease in Physical Strength
  • Diminished Mobility
  • Diminished Balance
  • And more.

Any and all of these factors can reduce a person’s maneuverability in their homes. Consequently, these changes can reduce one’s ability to navigate the home, care for and clean their home, access necessary items in the home, and more.

How Can Aging in Place Benefit Patients?

Aging in place can be beneficial for most seniors. By aging in place, they have a sense of independence and confidence. Not to mention it simply makes people happier to be able to live in a comfortable, familiar place.

Home Modifications Are a Large Part of Aging in Place

So, how exactly does one age in place? Well, the key is in adjusting the home to compensate for any of the “changes as we age” which we discussed earlier. For example, installing grab bars throughout the kitchen and bathroom can help prevent falls for those with diminished balance.

It’s also important to think about how a patient’s mobility may change as time goes on. Consider what help they may need to navigate and utilize their home safely three or five years down the road.
