5 Maintenance Tips for Keeping Your Scooter in Good Condition

A mobility scooter is not cheap. Chances are, you’ve paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for your mobility scooter, and that means you want to do everything you can to protect your investment. You can protect your investment by keeping your mobility scooter in good condition. Unsure of how to do that? Keep reading for five maintenance tips.

1.   Keep it Clean

One of the most obvious ways to maintain your scooter is to keep it clean. A scooter that is covered in mud, dirt, grass, and other debris can eventually lead to problems that will affect the scooter’s useability. Regularly clean your scooter using rubbing alcohol mixed with water. Place this mixture on a slightly damp microfiber cloth and wipe down the entire surface of the scooter, except places that can lead to water entering electrical or mechanical components.

2.   Keep the Batteries in Good Health

When you think about maintaining your wheelchair, you probably think about maintaining the exterior. But, you should also be paying attention to your scooter’s interior. Pay close attention to the health of your scooter’s batteries. Never let them reach the red zone, and always charge your batteries after using your scooter, no matter how long you used it.

3.   Don’t Stress Out the Motor

Avoid putting unnecessary stress on your scooter’s motor. Some of the common ways people tend to do this are by:

  • Adding more weight than what the unit is rated for
  • Using the scooter for steep inclines
  • Going through tough terrain

The user manual will have the scooter’s weight capacity, incline rating, and other important information. Having an idea of what your scooter can handle will help users make more informed decisions about what they can and cannot put their mobility scooter through so they won’t stress out the motor.

4.   Avoid Moisture

Going over puddles, wet grass, and other wet terrains with your scooter is generally not recommended. Some scooters are designed to cope with water, but most are not designed to tackle water. Once water enters your scooter, it can quickly deteriorate your mobility device. If you want to get the most out of your scooter, avoid water, moisture, and high levels of humidity.

5.   Thoroughly Read the User Manual

It’s common practice for people to overlook manuals and go right to using a device. But, it’s recommended that you thoroughly read it. Your user’s manual contains plenty of helpful information that will help you maintain your scooter. If you’ve thrown out your user’s manual or have no idea where you’ve placed it, you can usually find the correct one for your device on the internet.
